Portrait

Agile, digital, efficient and strategic in public management and non-profit organisations. With this further education programme at our university you will gain an insight into management in the public sector and administration. You will develop skills in various areas of public institutions. Topics of the modular CAS in Public Management & Development are strategy, business planning, new working environments and digital tools. 

Training objectives

With this CAS you will develop your personal and organisational skills in the public and non-profit sectors. 

  • You have in-depth knowledge of changing social conditions, various forms of organisation and change processes in administration, the non-profit sector and the public sector. 
  • As a specialist and manager in your organisation, you are able to initiate, implement, monitor and evaluate suitable and future-oriented development processes. 
  • You have a high level of reflective competence regarding the dynamics of organisations and your own role in change processes in administrative management. 
  • You have the skills to successfully implement change processes with stakeholders inside and outside the organisation. 
  • You independently and directly establish a link between your administrative or non-profit knowledge and your current management tasks in the public sector. 
  • You put this knowledge into practice with the involvement of employees and other partners.

Qualification + title

Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) from Bern University of Applied Sciences in «Public Management & Development» (12 ECTS-Credits)

Lecturers

Our lecturers are proven experts with extensive practical and theoretical knowledge in their subject areas. They have at least a university degree plus many years of experience in higher education. 

Requirements + Admission

Are you a professional or manager and do you move skilfully on the political scene or on the stage of non-profit organisations? Would you like to take a course in public management to master complex challenges in the public sector?

University degree

You will be admitted to the programme with a degree from a university, university of applied sciences, university of teacher education, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, or an equivalent foreign university and at least two years of professional experience.

Higher vocational training

If you have a qualification from a higher vocational education institution (Diploma Höhere Fachschule HF, Federal Diploma, Federal Certificate of Proficiency) and several years of professional experience, you will also be admitted to the programme. However, you will be required to attend our Introduction to Academic Study before starting the CAS. Completion of this module is a prerequisite for admission to the CAS.

Exceptions

In exceptional circumstances applicants may still  be admitted. The head of the degree programme will make a decision based upon your application and extenuating circumstances. Please contact us. If you are admitted, you will in any case attend the course «Introduction to Academic Writing» (in German) before the first CAS.

You do not have to meet any admission requirements to take part in a specialised course. If you wish to earn ECTS credits, the general admission requirements for continuing education apply.

We offer short, free learning events for all students of our CAS programmes. With these offers we would like to support you in completing your CAS successfully.

Effective learning in continuing education at universities of applied sciences

You will learn about transfer-oriented learning models and techniques. You reflect on your own learning biography and are encouraged to try out new learning behaviour.

Workshop Transfer Report 

You will be supported in writing your report and benefit from active peer counselling. You will present your unfinished report and receive feedback from the audience as well as from an expert.

Methodology Transfer Report 

You will get to know and understand the exact tasks of a transfer report. We teach you the quality criteria to write a good report.

We highly recommend participation for your first CAS. You will receive further information and schedule before the start of the study.

Organisation + Registration

The duration of the programme is 21 study days. For the CAS in Public Management & Development you choose three of four specialist modules. Dates and information can be found in the appropriate section for each of these.
