Situation

The coffee sector in Burundi is of strategic socio-economic importance. However, it is also confronted with a multitude of challenges and lacks behind its potential. Working together with various stakeholders, including the Kahawatu Foundation and L’ Office pour le Développement du Café du Burundi (ODECA), the project "Redynamiser le secteur du cafe au Burundi", co-financed by SDC, seeks to address these challenges. Experts of the HAFL Hugo P. Cecchini Institute are involved in the project providing the following support: 1) Economic and financial analysis of the planned investment; 2) Analysis of coffee profitability at farm level; 3) Gender analysis to identify avenues to foster the inclusion of women in the coffee value chain; 4) Support to the project implementing agency (Kahawatu Foundation) for the development of the project document (prodoc).

This project contributes to the following SDGs

  • 1: No poverty
  • 5: Gender equality
  • 8: Decent work and economic growth
  • 10: Reduced inequalities
  • 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • 13: Climate action
