Interview: Three questions for Sara Janeva

Why are you studying opera?

Opera is an art form that challenges me to push the boundaries of my vocal, emotional, and artistic capabilities. I am deeply inspired by its timeless aesthetic and honored to contribute to a tradition that preserves and shares stories that resonate across generations. This pursuit drives me to continually strive for artistic excellence.

What was your first encounter with opera?

At the age of 14, I attended a performance by Macedonia's leading coloratura soprano at the Macedonian Opera and Ballet, who would later become my mentor. I was captivated by the extraordinary skill and artistry of the performers, and this experience became a pivotal and inspiring moment in my journey toward opera.

Which is your favourite opera and why?

Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor is my favorite opera due to its gripping emotional intensity, breathtaking vocal challenges and tragic storyline. The opera's themes of love, betrayal, and psychological turmoil are conveyed through hauntingly beautiful melodies, making it a deeply moving and unforgettable experience for both performers and listeners. Its combination of high drama and vocal virtuosity has secured its place as a beloved staple of the operatic repertoire.
