We have set a clear course towards greater climate friendliness

Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH stresses its commitment to sustainability and climate protection. With the new Climate Roadmap 2030, BFH has adopted an action plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Highest possible reduction

“Our goal is to slash emissions by more than 60 percent by 2030. This will allow BFH to realise its claim of reducing the vast majority of emissions rather than offsetting them,” explains Manuel Fischer, head of the thematic field Sustainable Development. For emissions that it cannot reduce, BFH wants to look for practical and effective carbon offsetting options by 2030.

Gradual rollout of measures

“The Roadmap lists 30 measures in the areas of buildings, catering, mobility, awareness-raising and IT. The measures will now be formulated step by step, scheduled, and then implemented by 2030,” adds project manager Françoise Schuppisser.

Climate protection boosts attractiveness of BFH

With the Roadmap, BFH is assuming a pioneering role in climate protection. This will further increase the attractiveness of BFH as a good place to study and work. The measures are structured so that teaching and research – BFH’s core mission – do not suffer. Instead of an approach involving banning things and doing without, the focus is on information, awareness-raising and incentives with clear guidelines.

Large-scale project as a basis

The Roadmap is based on an analysis of BFH’s greenhouse gas emissions. With a broad support base and involving almost three dozen staff and internal and external experts, 270 proposals for measures were developed and evaluated according to criteria such as impact, cost, scope for action and acceptance. The implementation of the measures will be monitored closely.
